Downtown Update

May 11-15th is National Bike to Work Week

Try a healthy, alternative mode of transportation next week. Plenty of activities are planned around Duluth’s Downtown area during National Bike to Work Week including:

  • May 11 at 10am:  Campaign Kick-off at Fitger’s with a celebrity ride and News Conference
  • May 14 at 10am:  Artist-designed bike rack is to be installed at Grandma’s Restaurant and news conference to unveil other locations throughout Downtown
  • May 15:  Free DTA bus rides for bicyclists, use of the YMCA for bike storage and showers and a bicycle commuter break at Lake Superior Plaza from 7-9am (including bike safety checks, refreshments from the Radisson and commuter information.  Fitger’s will also host a day-long celebration from 7am-7pm which includes gift bags for cyclists, free safety checks, refreshments and prizes.

Recertifying the DDWD

The Duluth Downtown Waterfront District is moving another step closer to recertification.  Property owners are invited to an Input Session on May 19th at 7:30am in the Lyric Conference Center at Porter’s.  If you wish to provide ideas or hear more on the plans for keeping the district services operating, please join us.  Petitions will be mailed to property owners in the coming weeks, with a petition kick-off celebration event planned at the Blackwater Lounge in June.

Calling All Green Thumbs

The 7th annual “Dig in for the Downtown Waterfront” is scheduled for Wednesday, May 27th at Bayfront Park.  Volunteers are needed to help plant flowers in approximately 180 streetscape planters that will adorn the sidewalks of the Downtown area.  Gather up your colleagues and your neighbors and pitch in for a good cause!  Planting starts at 10am and typically wraps up in just over an hour (depending upon the number of helping hands!).  Join us for a FREE lunch afterward, compliments of the Inn on Lake Superior

Downtown Perk—

What does the I-35 Reconstruction Mean for Downtown

What happens when I-35 is faced with reconstruction and major repairs in the coming years?  How will this impact Duluth’s Downtown Waterfront? Roberta Dwyer, MNDOT Project Manager will be our guest speaker at the June 9th Downtown Perk Breakfast program.  This summer marks the start of a 4-year improvement project on I-35 from Boundary Avenue to 26th Avenue East.  MNDOT states the project will reconstruct 1-35 for the next 40 years, increase safety and reduce maintenance.  But, with that, comes lane closures, ramp closures and congestion.

Hit the bricks and enjoy Downtown Duluth’s biggest summer celebration.  The Sidewalk Days Festival is scheduled to run July 8th, 9th & 10th.

Get in on great shopping, mouth-watering food, toe-tapping music and fun for the kids during this annual event in the heart of the city.  More than 50 different vendors will join our Downtown merchants to take to the street.  Superior Street will be closed to vehicular traffic starting at 8:00AM each day between Lake Avenue and 4th Avenue West.  So stroll the street and experience how the community spirit really comes alive in Duluth’s Downtown. Plus, the activity spreads outside the blocked boundaries, from First Street to Fitgers.

On the lookout for: The GDC is always looking for more vendors, artisans, musicians and entertainers.  If you or someone you know is interested in being part of the Sidewalk Days Festival please contact Special Events Coordinator Darlene Marshall at  218-740-3747 or email dmarshall@downtownduluth.com
